Kent Trails Nature Walk (July 2017)

The Kent Trails system around Millennium Park offers a great variety of Michigan ecosystems observable from the comfort of a modest paved trail system.

Berries. Mmm, berries.

A dragonfly. Hard pic to catch.

Flowers, in relief.

Tent caterpillars at work.

The park was filled with butterflies.

A brain fungus.

The trail maps.

A duck pays me no attention.

Three herons guard the lake with ruthless abandon.

A group of wandering teens asked for a photo, so I obliged.

A pumping shack for one of the many small petroleum pumps dotting the area.

A memorial badge on one of the benches facing the river.

A path (formerly, a train trestle) cutting across the park.

A mama turkey. Her babies were there, too, but I didn't approach.

A reminder of days gone past, when the area featured gypsum mines.

These honky-tonk dudes left me alone, for once.

They're bigger than they look.

The circle of life. Hakuna Matata, etc.

Slowest. Stare-off. Ever.

A turtle's shell makes for a great dragonfly helipad.

Another park visitor, tether and all.

An elevated walkway near Millennium Park.

A fierce windstorm had passed a few weeks earlier.

Another reminder of times long past.

A bit of color amid a sea of green.
